Boston: Turning city land into home-buyer opportunities

BOSTON --- A Boston initiative to turn city-owned lots into affordable home-buying opportunities seems to be hitting its stride as 73 units are in construction, 45 are expected to start shortly and a lottery will be held on Feb. 8 for six homes created on city property in Mattapan.

Medway: Metro West nonprofit has 2nd deal cooking

MEDWAY --- The non-profit developer that has received town support to build 48 affordable units on West St. is now interested in building 12 more units on a town-owned site, and is considering putting the two projects together in order to seek sufficient financing to develop both sites. Medway has already pledged to put $1 million in CPA funds into the first project and could decide to put in more if the two projects merged.

Falmouth: 40B seasonal rentals questioned

FALMOUTH --- A new concern surfaced in a developer's bid to build 104 rental units on Main St. with a Ch. 40B permit as the developer's representative told the Zoning Board of Appeals the developer would be opposed to any limits on whether the market-rate units could be rented seasonally or by the week.

Amherst: Select Board weighs Beacon TIF

AMHERST --- Beacon Communities has made a formal request to the Select Board to become the first developer to use the town's new affordable housing property tax incentive program so it can move forward with its $47.5 million North Square Mill District project. Plans call for 130 apartments, with 26 affordable for households at or below 50 percent of area median income. To build the project, Beacon is seeking a tax break from the Select Board as well as a Ch. 40B permit from the Zoning Board of Appeals.

Westford: +400 40B units loom in the pipeline

WESTFORD --- More than 400 rental units loom to be built in town through Ch. 40B and if all are approved, it would double the number of units in town and push the town well past the state's affordable housing threshold of 10 percent. Right now, Westford is at 8 percent.

Boston: VietAid may build in Bowdoin-Geneva

BOSTON --- Designated by the city as the developer of a piece of surplus land in Dorchester's Bowdoin-Geneva neighborhood, the Vietnamese American Initiative for Development Inc.has announced plans to build a mixed-use and mixed-income affordable housing complex with 41 apartments.
