Job Overview Summary

Reporting to the Director of Finance, the Controller will plan and oversee the accounting operations for MHP. Responsibilities include producing financial reports, maintenance of an adequate system of accounting records, and a comprehensive set of controls and budgets designed to mitigate risk, enhance the accuracy of MHP's reported financial results, and ensure that reported results comply with generally accepted accounting principles, as well as state and federal regulations. Accounting functions include accounts payable, accounts receivable, bank reconciliations, payroll, and benefits reconciliations. The Controller will supervise key accounting staff and manage accounting operations, financial reporting, and monthly closes. In addition, the Controller will oversee and manage most aspects of the annual audit including planning and day-to-day interaction with the audit team, preparation of audit workpapers, draft audit reports and financial statements.

Below is an example of how you may spend your day:

  • Maintaining a documented system of accounting policies and procedures; create, revise as needed, and implements a system of controls over accounting transactions to minimize risk.
  • Creating and overseeing routine workflows using MHP’s accounting system, Sage Intacct, including monthly close, AP review with third-party payor, payroll cycle, monthly debt service reconciliations, contract management processes, grant-program set up, and required reporting.
  • Identify and recommend workflow efficiencies.
  • Providing direct supervision and support to members of the finance team including focus on professional development.
  • Producing monthly financial reports; ensure that the reported results comply with generally accepted accounting principles (GASB, FASB).
  • Review financials and general ledger monthly and, as needed, for accuracy, completeness and unusual activity before reports are provided to management.
  • Creating standard and special request financial reports and dashboards using MHP accounting software, SAGE Intacct.
  • Training accounting staff on the use of MHP accounting software, SAGE systems, and best practices.
  • Working closely with the Director of Finance and Financial Analyst to ensure financial data is uploaded/sync’d between MHP accounting systems to other software applications as needed, including Salesforce, RealSynergy loan servicing, Paylocity payroll, Workday Adaptive Insights. Help resolve any data errors for accuracy between internal systems as needed.

Hybrid Schedule
The Controller position will work out of MHP’s Boston office a minimum of two days per week and may work remotely up to three days per week. At least one office day must be on Wednesday, the designated team day. MHP’s office is conveniently located minutes from South Station.

Compensation
The projected compensation range for this role is $125,000 to $140,000. Any final offer will be based on various factors including job-related knowledge, skills, competencies, and experience. The listed range is just one component of MHP's total compensation package for employees.

Knowledge, Experience and Skills

  • Advanced knowledge and skills in accounting standards and sophisticated enterprise software required. SAGE or SAGE Intacct experience strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated excellent understanding of complex financial statements, concepts, and reporting.
  • Advanced competency in Excel and financial modeling software required. Workday Adaptive Insights experience a plus.
  • Demonstrated successful management and supervisory skills with at least five years of experience managing a finance/accounting team of three or more.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the concepts of restricted and unrestricted accounts/funds and the required accounting treatment and financial reporting.
  • Excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience working with a loan portfolio, complex real estate transactions, and amortization schedules a plus.
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance required. MBA or Master’s Degree in related field a plus.
  • Seven years or more of related experience required.
  • Certified Public Accountant or Certified Management Accountant designation preferred.

Travel:

Travel may occasionally be required within Massachusetts and to attend annual out-of-state trade conferences, such as the annual SAGE conference. A valid Driver’s license, ability to acquire one, and/or reliable means of transportation is required.
